They are: Andrew Jones – men’s basketball, University of Texas; Charlotte Teeter – women’s soccer, Texas Tech University; Chase Griffin – football, University of California, Los Angeles; Dana Rettke – women’s volleyball, University of Wisconsin; and Gloria Mutiri – women’s volleyball, University of Oregon.
The team’s formation was first announced in July, with 14 inaugural members celebrating the historic new policies allowing college athletes to monetize their name, image, and likeness. Each of the following new athletes has been individually selected for their personal story of overcoming adversity and how they inspire others to move beyond their limits with confidence. The #BreakingLimits program is part of Degree's larger $5 million commitment to inspire people to move beyond their limits – supporting those who face the biggest barriers to being active and providing them access to the tools, resources, and safe spaces needed to move more.
The selected athletes were chosen through Degree’s Instagram page on which they shared their personal stories on how they overcame societal challenges in their own lives. The #BreakingLimits Team will take part in various programming, including local community projects, content partnerships, a mentorship program with Unilever and more over the next year. Mentors will develop a personal relationship with the athletes and guide them to keep breaking limits beyond their athletic career. The #BreakingLimits mentorship program includes access to Unilever’s professional resources and industry expertise; a Unilever executive partnership with #BreakingLimits athletes tailored to help guide their future career interests and aspirations; and a Unilever commitment to set a fair and thoughtful precedent to working with college athletes.
"Unilever is a company that believes business can be a force for societal good and we're committed to continue taking a meaningful, long-term approach towards working with college athletes," said Rob Master, vice president of Media and Digital Engagement at Unilever NA.
As part of Degree’s larger commitment to help millions of young people transform their lives through movement, the brand has pledged $5 million over the next five years to inspire people to move beyond their limits. Athletes will also be able to identify programs in their own community that are personally meaningful and can help inspire others to break limits, too.
