LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The Battle of I-25 is on once again.
Friday morning, the NM State men's basketball team revealed the dates for its pair of much-anticipated 2021-22 matchups with age-old interstate rival New Mexico.
The first clash between the Aggies and Lobos in the 2021-22 campaign is set for Tuesday, Nov. 30, when New Mexico pays a visit to Las Cruces for a showdown inside the Pan American Center. Just a few days later, the Aggies head north to Albuquerque, N.M., for the second installment of the series which is set to take place inside Dreamstyle Arena on Monday, December 6. Tip-off times and television information for the clashes will be released at a later date.
Though the series between the in-state rivals began in the 1908-09 season, NM State and New Mexico did not begin battling on an annual basis until the 1924-25 campaign. Since then, only two events - World War II and the COVID-19 pandemic - have prevented the squads from duking it out on the hardwood.
Heading into the 2021-22 season, NM State and New Mexico have met 224 times with the Lobos holding a 123-101 edge in the all-time series. Since Chris Jans took over as the Aggies' head coach prior to the start of the 2017-18 season, NM State has closed the gap in the all-time series by going 4-2 (.667) against the Lobos.
The series was put on hold in the 1942-43 and 1943-44 seasons due to World War II. The teams also did not meet in the 2019-20 season after in-state regulations regarding the COVID-19 pandemic prevented either team from playing games within the state of New Mexico.
