The race between U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul and his Democratic challenger Mike Siegel is now rated a toss-up, according to the Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan elections forecaster that changed its outlook for the race Monday morning.
The publication had given McCaul a slight edge for the entire election, rating Texas’ 10th Congressional District “Lean Republican” before shifting it on the eve of Election Day. The district, which runs from the Houston suburbs all the way to Austin, is now the second one in Harris County to be considered a toss-up, joining the 22nd Congressional District.
Dave Wasserman, the Cook Political Report’s House editor, announced the rating change along with seven other shifts in favor of Democrats, including two others in Texas, the 24th and 31st Congressional Districts in north and central Texas, respectively. Those two seats, like the 10th district, are controlled by Republicans.
Democrats made McCaul an early target this election after Siegel lost in 2018 by 4.3 percentage points. The race flew under the radar, with the margin surprising observers from both parties.
Siegel supports a Medicare for All single-payer health care system and the Green New Deal, and he has been endorsed by U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, leading McCaul to label his opponent as “the most extreme candidate in the country.”
Siegel reacted to the rating change Monday, tweeting, “Keep working y’all. We can do this!”
McCaul is scheduled to hold a rally Monday evening in Katy with Republican congressional candidate Wesley Hunt, while Siegel was scheduled to make a seven-stop tour through the district on Election Day.
The district covers all of Austin, Colorado, Fayette, Waller and Washington counties and parts of Bastrop, Harris, Lee and Travis.
Another nonpartisan forecaster, Sabato’s Crystal Ball, shifted the race for the 22nd District from “toss-up” to “Lean Republican” Monday. Cook and “Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales” still rate the contest between Democrat Sri Kulkarni and Republican Troy Nehls a toss-up.
