The Longmont Police Department announced charges in one of three fatal traffic crashes that happened between Sept. 25 and Nov. 2.
Police released a news release Friday outlining details in each of the crashes and the department’s ruling, alongside the Boulder County District Attorney’s, in each.
Sept. 25 crash at Ken Pratt Boulevard and Zlaten Drive
The five-vehicle crash occurred around 7:30 p.m. and resulted in two fatalities, multiple injuries and significant property damage, according to a Longmont police news release.
A 27-year-old woman who was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee has been charged on suspicion of two counts of careless driving, resulting in death; careless driving resulting in injury; failing to yield right of way; and not wearing a seat belt, according to a Longmont police news release. All of those counts are misdemeanors.
The woman was traveling westbound on Ken Pratt Boulevard at Zlaten Drive, in the left turn lane. The Jeep was occupied by a man in the front passenger seat and a child in the rear passenger seat.
A Ford F350 truck, operated by a 33-year-old man from Denver, was pulling a trailer with a skid steer attached and was traveling eastbound on Ken Pratt Boulevard at Zlaten Drive in the right through lane, the release said. The Jeep turned left in front of the F350 as the light began to cycle from green to yellow. The release said that the result was the front of the F350 striking the passenger side of the Jeep, killing the front seat passenger.
The Jeep went airborne, striking another vehicle on Zlaten Drive, the release said. Following the collision with the Jeep, the release said that the truck struck another vehicle that was stopped on Zlaten Drive at Ken Pratt Boulevard, then hit the signal light pole on the driver’s side. The release said that the collision with the signal pole killed the truck’s rear seat passenger, who was not wearing his seat belt.
Oct. 12 crash at Main Street, mid-block between Ninth and 10th avenues
The Boulder County District’s Attorney and Longmont Police Department agreed that a 27-year-old driver would not be charged after she fatally struck a 58-year-old pedestrian while he was crossing Main Street, according to the release.
Longmont police said in the release that collision was unavoidable and that the “proximate cause was the pedestrian unlawfully crossing the roadway while intoxicated.”
The collision occurred around 8:20 p.m. The 27-year-old Berthoud woman was driving a Toyota 4Runner, when she turned onto Main Street from eastbound Ninth Avenue. The driver moved into the left, northbound lane on Main Street, the release said.
The pedestrian was struck in the left lane of Main Street, near the multipurpose lane, and suffered fatal injuries, the release said. Although the roadway was illuminated by street lighting, the area the pedestrian was struck in was shadowed, the release said. The man was also wearing dark clothing when he entered the roadway from the driver’s right, and was moving diagonally, the release said. In addition, there were oncoming vehicles with headlights illuminated. The release said that all of these factors decrease a driver’s ability to perceive and react to pedestrian path intrusions.
Alcohol and speed were not determined to be contributing factors in relation to the driver, the release said. Alcohol intoxication was confirmed as a factor for the pedestrian, according to the release.
Nov. 2 crash at E. Ninth Avenue and Deerwood Drive
The Boulder County District Attorney and Longmont police department recommended no charges would be filed against a driver who fatally struck a cyclist on E. Ninth Avenue between Pace Street and Deerwood Drive, the release said.
The proximate cause of the collision was determined to be the bicyclist entering the roadway, causing an immediate hazard, the release said.
The bicyclist was traveling eastbound along Ninth Avenue between Pace Street and Deerwood Drive, most likely on the sidewalk or far-right shoulder of the roadway, according to the release.
The Toyota pickup was traveling eastbound on E. Ninth Avenue between Pace Street and Deerwood Drive in the travel lane. According to the witnesses, and the driver of the Toyota truck, the bicyclist rode off the sidewalk and suddenly turned into the path of travel of the vehicle, the release said. The Toyota driver attempted evasive action, however, the two collided in a sideswipe fashion, according to the release.
The bicyclist suffered a fatal head injury when they fell to the ground. The bicyclist was not wearing a helmet.
Longmont police warned people to be aware of their surroundings while they are using the roadway.
“All of these cases are tragic and have significantly impacted everyone involved,” the release said. “Momentary distractions of any kind can have deadly results.”
