How to utilize four of the most popular university majors
Many students enter university unsure of where their studies will take them: and when those 4+ years are up, they find themselves thinking “what next”? We at the Argus have dedicated this article to helping those students consider career options that they may not have thought of.
English
Teaching English as a Foreign Language Instructor
Oftentimes, an English degree can take you down the path of teaching others. If you’re interested in sharing your English skills with others, you could find yourself in a career teaching English as a second language. Being a TEFL instructor could mean working with children, travelling abroad, and potentially self-employment. Are you up for some adventure?
Lexicographer
Are you interested in taking on big projects? Lexicographers help to create dictionaries by gathering information to support their definitions. When starting out you would likely begin your career as a dictionary contributor before maintaining the job as a full-time career- so be patient! If organization and accuracy are your strength, this could be your calling.
Newspaper Journalist
Becoming a newspaper journalist is a fantastic way to both get involved in your community and put your name out there as a writer. This job involves attending community events, making connections with community members, and writing articles alongside a team of co-workers. This career is worth pursuing for anyone who likes to roll with the flow of spontaneity- while being mindful of deadlines, of course.
Don’t feel motivated by these options? Don’t stress! There is an incredibly wide variety of jobs available for English graduates, including (but not limited to) editorial positions, publishing, and more specific jobs in social justice and education markets. Further education could also lead to research jobs, university and college professorships: so if you’re reaching the end of your degree and are feeling the pressure to focus your job search, why not consider graduate studies?
Psychology
Forensic Psychologist
Forensic psychologists do the exciting (and sometimes dangerous) work of assessing criminal behaviour. In this job, you would have one-on-one sessions with criminals in order to assess their likelihood of re-offending, self-harm, suicide, or other high-risk behaviour. You would also be partially in charge of a treatment plan for their rehabilitation into society. This job would allow you to help people change their lives for the better while also protecting your community.
High-Intensity Therapist
Are you interested in working with and caring for people of all backgrounds to give them the necessary mental help they need to pursue a ‘normal’ life? In this profession, you would assess patients with all manner of complex psychological problems and perform exposure therapy, interventions, specialty advice, and long-term care. Being a high-intensity therapist is high-stress and high-reward, so it’s important to know what you want in a career before applying.
Sport and Exercise Psychologist
Sport and exercise psychologists work with individual athletes and teams to help them cope with the psychological demands of their sport. If you enter this field you may also choose to work with the general public, where your job will be to motivate people and increase participation in various types of exercise to encourage a healthy lifestyle. This is one way to use your psychology degree in a less stressful environment, or to combine a love of sports and psychology into one fulfilling career!
Psychology majors often tie their studies to social work as well, which opens up a whole world of interesting and more hands-on work: this would be a good option for people who are more interested in working within their communities.
Business
Forensic Accountant
A forensic accountant’s job is to investigate financial discrepancies such as fraudulent activity or misconduct. This is a highly specialized role that requires close attention to detail and fantastic numerical skills. Forensic accountants prevent scandal in large companies and monitor any mismanagement of funds through investigation. If you’re itching to use your business degree and hone your detective skills at the same time, this could be the job for you!
Risk Manager
A risk manager’s job is to assess any potential risks, such as profit loss, in a company. Once risk is assessed, risk managers create a plan to reduce, eliminate, or transfer the risk in order to save companies a lot of money. Choosing this profession would give you the potential for self-employment, full-time work, or travelling. People with a knack for reorganising finances and increasing efficiency may want to consider this as a goal for the end of their studies!

Business advisors are individuals who provide support for and coach businesspeople. Typically, business advisors will work towards a company’s growth in order to maintain the most profit possible. This job could be very rewarding for you if you’re the type of person who enjoys taking something mediocre and making it better. Through this work, you could stimulate the economy, create jobs, or diversify the market.
Business degrees have become increasingly valued in current markets. Do you have a hobby you might like to pursue as a career? Your business degree would help! While business majors have a wide variety of careers available to them within larger corporations, their education will also be beneficial in supporting local markets and their other interests. Community Education Officer

Special Educational Needs Teacher
This career is great for anyone who wants to help young people who require special attention and assistance achieve success in an educational setting. As a special educational needs teacher, you may work with children who are gifted, have autism, are hearing or visually impaired, have sensory difficulties, or have behavioural disorders. It would be your job to assess each individual case and work with these children to mark and assess their progress.
