The National Weather Service predicted record heat in Denver Saturday. As of Saturday afternoon, not only had a new record been set, but the city had officially recorded its latest day of 100 degrees or hotter since record-keeping began.

The National Weather Service’s Boulder office tweeted at 3:14 p.m. that Denver had reached 100 degrees, breaking the high-temperature record for Sept. 5, a 98-degree mark set just last year.

The mercury did not stop climbing there. By 4:40 p.m., the temperature had ticked up to 101 degrees, according to weather service, a new record high for the entire month of September.

Sept. 5 is the latest calendar date on which Denver has experienced triple-digit heat, breaking another 2019 record, the weather service reported. Denver reached 100 on Sept. 2 last year, the previous latest date.

The sweltering heat is setting up the city and northern Colorado for a major plunge. Labor Day Monday’s high is projected to be 92 degrees, according to the weather service. Snow is in the forecast for Tuesday as temperatures fall of a cliff into the 30s. Tuesday’s overnight low could be 28 degrees, forecasters say, 73 degrees colder than Saturday afternoon.
