Turnpike to close Sunday between Pittsburgh, Allegheny Valley interchanges - TribLIVE

Traffic on the Pennsylvania Turnpike between the Allegheny Valley interchange in Harmar and the Pittsburgh interchange in Monroeville will be forced to make a detour off the toll road early Sunday morning as crews remove the original Unity Trestle Road bridge in Plum Borough.

The turnpike closure will begin at 11 p.m. Saturday and continue until 6 a.m. Sunday, weather permitting. In the case of inclement weather, this bridge work will be performed April 11.

The new bridge was built beside the existing bridge and was opened to traffic in November, the turnpike commission said.

The turnpike commission is suggesting that eastbound traffic following suggested detour:

• Eastbound traffic will exit at the Allegheny interchange:

• Freeport Road to Route 910 west to Route 28 south to I-579 south/Veterans Bridge the Parkway East to the Pittsburgh interchange

• Westbound traffic will exit at the Pittsburgh interchange:

• Parkway East to the Ft. Duquesne Bridge to Route 28 north to Route 910 east to Freeport Road to the Allegheny Valley interchange.

Before the closure, information will be posted and announcements will be made at the Oakmont/Plum service plaza to warn customers that they will not be permitted to continue driving after 11 p.m. Saturday. Once the roadway is opened to traffic, a single lane will be in place through the project area until 11 a.m. Sunday.
