The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has reported 1,719 new cases of COVID-19 on Oct. 11, bringing the total number of cases reported in the state since the outset of the pandemic to 231,471.
One question surrounding the reporting of new cases is the degree to which the numbers have been affected by the decision to include antigen positive cases in the total count beginning on Sept. 25. The state keeps a running count of antigen positive cases, and to date, has reported 6,744 such cases compared with the 224,727 molecular positive cases. Of the 1,719 new cases reported today, 81 of them are antigen positive cases.
The number of deaths reported on Oct. 11 is 3,770, while hospitalizations increased modestly to 1,046, up from 1,034 on Oct. 10. One encouraging sign in the metrics is that the percentage of positive tests out of all tests administered has been under 6% for the last four reporting days (from Oct. 6 through Oct. 9).

In Dare County, 2 additional cases of COVID-19 were reported on Oct. 11 by the Department of Health and Human Services. That number reflects positive results from all tests, including the NC State Laboratory of Public Health and all hospital and commercial labs. There may be other reports, from the media and elsewhere, that will include different numbers during a given day, but this is an effective way of tracking numbers from the same source on a day-to-day basis.
