BOWIE, Md. – The No. 16 Bowie State University football team heads to Murfreesboro, N.C. for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division showdown with No. 24 Chowan University Saturday, Oct. 9. The Bulldogs and Hawks both enter the contest ranked in the nation after this week's AFCA DII Coach's Top-25 Poll rankings released Monday.

No. 16 Bowie State and No. 24 Chowan are one of two top-25 matchups happening this weekend. Additionally, the Bulldogs ranks first in NCAA DII defensive touchdowns (4) and a conference best, allowing just 14.2 points per outing while the Hawks have a NCAA DII and CIAA best, averaging 51.4 points per game. Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Hawks is slated for 1 p.m. from Garrison Stadium.

Saturday's contest marks the 11th overall meeting between the two programs as the Bulldogs hold the all-time series record at 7-3 overall. The last meeting occurred on Oct. 12, 2019 with BSU strangling the Hawks, 64-17 in front of over 4,000 fans at Bulldogs Stadium.

No. 16 Bowie State is coming off an impressive 44-7 victory against Johnson C. Smith last weekend to conclude the CIAA cross division action for 2021. The Bulldogs held the Golden Bulls to 164 yards of total offense, including just 66 yards on the ground. The Bulldogs defense ranks second in the league with total sacks (19) led by redshirt junior and defensive lineman Joshua Pryor (Baltimore, MD) who recorded 1.5 against JCSU. Pryor finished with a team-high five tackles, 1.5 tackle for losses and a fumble recovery in that contest.

BSU outscored JCSU 14-0 in the first quarter, 13-7 in the second stanza and a 17-0 frame in the fourth led by senior quarterback Ja'rome Johnson (Washington, D.C.) who went 13-of-22 in pass completions for 227 yards and a season-high four touchdowns. Senior running back Calil Wilkins (Temple Hills, MD) also had an outstanding game, leading the rushing unit with 120 yards – season high on 13 carries and a touchdown.

No. 24 Chowan enters the game 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the CIAA. The Hawks are coming off a 73-7 win over Winston-Salem State last weekend at home.

The Hawks allow 20.0 points per outing from their opponents but it has been CU's offense that has carried the momentum through five games this season, led by quarterback Bryce Witt who leads the conference with 1,573 total yards (314.6 average) and 20 touchdowns on 115-of-168 passes. Laurence King is Witt's number one target and the current leader in the league at the receiver slot with 571 yards off 40 receptions and seven touchdowns while Tyrek McNeil is the Hawks rushing leader with 335 yards on 45 carries – good for third in the CIAA.
