1. Pasta
Whether it's Bolognese, mac and cheese, lasagne or carbonara, every household should have a pasta recipe that they embrace. From a slow-cooking bolognese, like this classic recipe by Silvia Colloca, to this equally delicious rosé prawn spaghetti by Adam Liaw whipped up in under 30 minutes, sky is the limit when it comes to pasta. And you can go that extra mile by making your own pasta!
Watch episode 2 of Dishing It Up, where best friends Anna and Matthew put Jamie Oliver's very British bolognese to the test.
2. Stir-fry
Adam Liaw says stir-fry is a simple, quick and relatively healthy way of cooking. The trick is not loading it with too many ingredients, which can often result in soggy stir-fry. Try this entry-level stir fry from The Cook Up, Beef and snow peas or stir-fried broccoli stems with wood ear mushrooms, done in 15 minutes - prep time included!
3. Fried Rice
Fried rice is one of the most versatile dishes which you can make with pretty much anything. From Asia, to Nigeria, to Greece, there are so many variations of fried rice around the world. Chef, author and restaurateur Kylie Kwong says the trick is to "keep it really simple and traditional- just some really fresh and fluffy eggs, onion, bacon or Chinese sausage, ginger and some spring onions".
Try Kylie Kwong's delicious fried rice or YouTuber Uncle Roger’s egg fried rice, as seen on episode 7 of Dishing it Up.
4. Omelette
Whether it's plain, loaded, crispy or gooey, an omelette is one versatile dish that allows you to put your creativity to the test. From simple pan-cooked breakfasts like this blue cheese and mushroom omelette to hearty tortillas like this new potato and chorizo tortilla, there are so many ways to enjoy an omelette.
Try these recipes from around the world!
5. Soup
Home-cooked soups are nothing but nourishing and comforting. Practically any vegetable from cauliflower to asparagus, potato and even frozen peas can be made into soup.
It can be a way to use up leftover roast from the night before, like this chicken and vegetable soup with parsley pesto, or can be upgraded to a filling dish by throwing in some noodles, like this popular Indonesian chicken noodle soup (soto ayam).
Watch episode 7 of Dishing it Up, where friends since school Jonathan and Hari take on Marion Grasby’s char sui pork and prawn noodle soup
6. Brownies
Do you like them fudgy, dense or crumbly? There are so many ways to bake brownies and so many ways to jazz it up, from peanut butter to coconut, miso, and even veggies like beetroot and eggplant.
Brownies are one of those sweets which you can experiment with and have a relatively good success rate each time.
Try Donna Hay's molten choc-chunk brownies, as seen in episode 3 of Dishing it Up. Will your brownies be oozing with a molten chocolate centre? Feeling lazy? Then try this brownie recipe baked while you sleep!
