A heat wave that started in Massachusetts over the weekend is expected to last until at least the middle of the week, forecasters said.
Temperatures are forecast to reach 90-plus degrees until Wednesday, with the hottest weather expected Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
A heat advisory will remain in effect from noon Monday until 8 p.m. Tuesday in parts of the Pioneer Valley and Bristol and Plymouth counties as well as Worcester, Middlesex, Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk counties.
Highs on Monday will climb to the mid to upper 90s across the Pioneer Valley as well as much of Central and Eastern Massachusetts, though the Berkshires and the Cape and Islands should see temperatures in the upper 80s and lower 90s.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, highs are expected to hover in the mid to upper 90s across the state. Again, the Berkshires and Cape and Islands may see slightly cooler weather on both days.
Forecasters are warning of heat illnesses caused by hot temperatures and high humidity. They have urged people to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, keep out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.
“Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances,” the National Weather Service said. “Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.”
Individuals should also know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and stroke. Anyone experiencing a heat stroke has been urged to call 911.
While the weather will still be warm and muggy Thursday, lower high temperatures and potential rainfall should end the heat wave, though the forecast is subject to change more than 72 hours out.
Seasonable temperatures, dry conditions and much lower humidity levels are expected to return Friday and last into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
