FARMVILLE, Va. – High Point forward Sebastian Chalbaud headed in a go-ahead goal in the 35th minute, and the Panthers rode that strike the rest of the way to deal Longwood its first Big South loss of the season, 1-0 Saturday night at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
Chalbaud's game-winner was the lone strike in a back-and-forth battle between a pair of Big South unbeatens, with Longwood (3-6-2, 2-1-1 Big South) entering the game in second place in the Big South standings and High Point (4-4-2, 2-0-2) fourth.
The game lived up to that billing, as Chalbaud's first-half goal stood to the final whistle in a heated matchup highlighted by physicality at all three levels. Both teams generated multiple scoring chances throughout, including Longwood forward Tosin Ayokunle's breakaway chance midway through the second half. However, High Point goalkeeper Holden Trent made a point-blank serve to preserve the shutout and come out on top of a goalkeeper duel with Lancer senior Jacob Reimers.
That save by Trent was one of six on the night for Trent and proved to be crucial in a showdown between Trent and his Longwood counterpart Jacob Reimers, both of whom are ranked among the Big South's top four in goals against average. Reimers countered by stopping three of the four shots he faced, with all three of those saves coming at close range.
"We have grown so much as a team, and we are starting to see the fruit with this special group," said Longwood head coach Jon Atkinson. "They gave as good as they got tonight against a caliber team and never backed down, and the difference, I thought, on the night was taking your chances.
"The fans were magnificent tonight and created so much energy. The boys loved it and responded accordingly. Time to recover and get back up for the next one! Let's go Lancers!"
Chalbaud managed to sneak his game-winner past Reimers, however, as he redirected MD Myers muffed shot with a header into the upper corner. The assist gave Myers his team-leading 10th point of the season and helped extend the Panther's unbeaten streak to four games.
Meanwhile, the loss is Longwood's first in Big South play this season and drops the Lancers to third place in the league.
The Lancers will have an opportunity to restart their climb back to the top this Wednesday, Oct. 13, when they travel to Campbell for a 4 p.m. kickoff in Buies Creek, N.C.
